Panel notation is essentially a positional map of a window or door unit. Each letter in the code represents one panel within the frame, and its position in the sequence corresponds to the physical location of that panel in the unit. A three-letter code means three panels; a four-letter code means four. The distinction between O and X communicates whether a given panel operates or remains fixed.

The system originates in North American window manufacturing and has been widely adopted by European suppliers serving the American market. It gives architects and contractors a concise, unambiguous way to communicate configurations without relying on a drawing at every stage of the specification process. The most common configurations explained

The configurations architects encounter most frequently each have their own logic and their own appropriate application.

XOX is a three-panel unit with operable panels at both ends and a fixed panel in the center. The central fixed panel is typically the widest and serves as the primary view pane, while the flanking operable panels provide ventilation. It is one of the most common configurations in residential construction because it combines a large, uninterrupted field of glass with functional airflow.

OXXO is a four-panel unit with fixed panels on the outside and two operable panels meeting in the center. The meeting stiles of the two operable panels create a center joint, which can be an aesthetic consideration. Because the fixed outer panels visually anchor the frame, OXXO works well in wider openings where both symmetry and a clean central opening are priorities.

XX is the simplest multi-panel code: two operable panels with no fixed sections. Both panels operate, maximizing ventilation and access. In a sliding configuration, one panel travels behind the other; in a tilt-turn or casement configuration, both panels open independently. XX is often used in smaller openings or utility locations, though it also appears in larger openings where full operability is the intended design effect.

Beyond these three, codes such as OX, XO, OXXO, and OXXXO follow the same positional logic. Once the O/X convention is understood, any code can be read at a glance.

When to use each configuration in a project

Choosing a configuration is rarely about operability alone. It involves sightlines, structural requirements, ventilation goals, and the visual rhythm of the facade.

XOX is typically the default choice for living spaces and primary view windows because the wide central fixed panel maintains an uninterrupted glass surface. The flanking operable panels are generally narrower, making them lighter and easier to operate. In high-altitude locations such as mountain homes or coastal properties where wind loads are a factor, narrower operable panels reduce stress on hardware and seals.

OXXO is worth considering when the opening is wide enough that a single central fixed panel would appear disproportionately large, or when the design calls for a more symmetrical appearance with a central opening. The two meeting operable panels create a visual seam at the center that some architects use deliberately as a compositional element.

XX works well in bedrooms, utility rooms, or anywhere full ventilation access matters more than a continuous sightline. It is also the natural choice when the opening is narrow enough that introducing a fixed panel would reduce the operable area to an impractical size. On projects where a window also serves as an emergency egress opening, XX ensures that both panels can be fully opened.

Applying notation to lift-and-slide and folding door systems

The same O/X convention extends to large-format door systems, although the way each panel type operates changes significantly at door scale.

In a lift-and-slide configuration, X panels are those that lift away from their compression seals and travel along the track; O panels remain fixed within the frame. When the sash is operated, it lifts clear of the seals, which reduces friction and allows even very heavy panels to slide smoothly. When closed, the sash returns to the sealing position. The notation OX describes a two-panel unit in which one panel slides and one remains fixed. OXXO describes a four-panel unit in which the two center panels slide toward the fixed outer panels. Corner configurations, where panels retract to open an entire room corner, use the same notation but require additional annotation describing the angle and direction of travel.

In folding door systems, X panels fold and stack; O panels are fixed. The notation alone does not specify which direction the panels fold or where they stack, so folding door specifications typically pair the notation with a diagram or direction indicator. The code OXXXO on a folding door means three center panels fold and stack while the two outer panels remain as fixed frame panels.

For large-format lift-and-slide door systems, the number and configuration of panels also affect panel weight distribution, track loading, and threshold construction — all of which carry structural implications that go beyond the notation itself.

Common misreads and specification errors to avoid

The most frequent error is reading the notation from the interior rather than the exterior. Because O and X are symmetrical letters, a code such as XOX looks identical from both sides, but an asymmetric code such as OX will produce a mirror-image unit if the viewing direction is applied incorrectly. When in doubt, the convention assumes exterior elevation, read left to right.

A second common problem is conflating the notation with the operating style. X means operable, but it does not specify how the panel operates. A sliding X and a tilt-turn X are written identically. The operating style — sliding, tilt-turn, casement, tilt-only — must be specified separately, either in the legend or as a suffix in the specification document.

Fixed panels are sometimes omitted from the notation by mistake, particularly when the designer’s attention is focused on the operable elements. A unit specified as XX when the intent was XOX will arrive without a central fixed panel, which entirely changes the structural behavior of the frame, the sightline, and the hardware requirements.

Finally, the number of panels in the notation must match the number of panels shown on the dimensioned drawing. A discrepancy between the two is a warning sign that one document was revised without updating the other.
